Who I Work With
My primary focus is individual therapy for older adolescents (14 and up) and adults. From time to time I work with families and couples as an adjunct to individual treatment.
Before becoming a psychologist, I was a lawyer. I work with many lawyers and law students in my practice. My background means that I think and listen a little differently than other psychologists. Lawyers are trained to spot the fundamental issues in a complicated situation, to elicit and interpret essential information from other people, and to look far beneath the surface of what is presented — to dig deeper. I see these skills as essential to my work in psychotherapy.
Being close to Emory, Georgia State, and Georgia Tech, and having done some work at our local counseling centers in the past, I also work with college students and graduate students.
Most of my experience and training happened at a large public hospital (Grady) and its affiliated clinics. I have worked with people from many different backgrounds, people with serious mental illness, and those with physical illness, including HIV/AIDS.
Some therapists “specialize” in particular areas or types of problems. I don't. Most people come to therapy in distress, and are either depressed or anxious or both. Many are in the middle of a major transition, or anticipating one. Every individual brings a different set of issues and experiences to therapy. I prefer to remain open to working with anyone who feels comfortable working with me.
